Hybrid Systems Explained

A hybrid system is a combination of power sources harnessed and stored in a storage medium. Any multitude of energy sources can be combined through the use of controllers. The energy is then stored in a large battery. From the battery the power is converted to the required voltage using an inverter. The inverter inverts the 12, 24, 48volt system into useable 240volt systems.

At Bundu Power we have 4 power sources which can be combined in different configurations ranging from 1 - 3 power sources, namely:

1. Solar
2. Wind
3. Generator
4. National Grid

Combining the power sources to charge the storage device allows it to be charged quickly and easily regardless of if one of the renewable energy sources is unavailable or weak. Extensive overcast conditions or lack of wind for a few weeks would normally lead to your storage device becoming drained and hence running out of electricity. By having a 3rd backup power source in place allows you to keep the batteries charged automatically when the batteries reach their low threshold. By using the national gird if available you are able to save due to the lower cost of the electricity compared to that of a generator. Whilst if you want to be totally self-sufficient or you live where there is no national grid you are able to use a generator for the purpose of charging the batteries when they meet their low threshold limit.

Generally Hybrid systems are used for lighting and small (non-heating) appliances such as TV's and decoders. As it is hugely expensive to supply enough power to run high energy consuming appliances such as stoves, ovens, heaters and kettles.

To overcome this problem, generally houses which go green or install these systems to go off the grid generally convert their heating and cooking appliances which did run on electricity to Gas. Whilst the initial outlay of capital can be substantial, the long term savings and benefits largely outweigh the initial investment.

Such projects can often be financed by the bank and hence allowing you to install a hybrid system and pay it off over time. This investment adds to the value of your home as well as reducing your reliance on the national power provider. Not to mention the impact on the environment.

Hybrid Systems are largely GREEN POWER. It is renewable and abundant and as the technology improves, you are able to run more for less. No worries about the increase in electricity, load shedding or power cuts!
